Often, we receive calls from eager yogis asking "does yoga help with weight loss?". Here's your answer. Yes and No.

There are a lot of factors that influence weight loss, including what you eat, your mental state, how you exercise and how you live your life on a daily basis. Here we will breakdown the many ways yoga can help you.Ultimately, your hormones play the most important role.As a result of daily pressures, stress, work & family obligations, and a constant to-do list, our cortisol levels skyrocket, disrupting our sex hormones, creating a cascade of hormonal imbalance. Yoga helps to reduce cortisol levels, which in turn helps to restore hormone balance. With this balance, our body is able to more efficiently and effectively burn fat, leading to more successful and sustainable weight loss. You can think of it like this: cortisol is the enemy of your sex hormones, and yoga is like a magical wand that helps to vanquish cortisol and restore balance. So, get ready to wave goodbye to cortisol and hello to better weight loss!

In addition to how we deal with these "stresses", our perceptions also play a role.It is only when you stress about something that stress exists.Does that make sense?Consider it this way: you aren't having a stressful day.You are actually attaching a negative emotion to events rather than dealing with them. When you have faith in the universe working for you, you let go and move on.

The typical yoga class does not aim to give you a sweaty workout. It goes much deeper than that. Yoga classes nourish your mind, body, and soul. During your class, a skilled instructor will incorporate several modalities. This includes breathing exercises, setting intentions, physical practices, meditations, and letting go at the end of class in a healing Savasasana (corpse pose).

When you practice yoga regularly, it will begin to spill over into all aspects of your life. Your stress level will drop since you won't take life so seriously and you will have more patience in dealing with your family and your job. You'll learn to stop and smell the flowers and nothing will feel rushed. By noticing your mental state changing, you automatically feel better and are more energetic, which increases muscle strength. Do you know about the muscle testing technique? Muscle testing is a technique used to access the subconscious mind. The practitioner applies pressure to a muscle while the subject thinks about either a negative or a positive thought. Every study found that negative thoughts resulted in muscle weakness and a significant decrease in strength. In response to a positive thought, the muscles were very strong and sturdy. Our thoughts influence our bodies in a very interesting way. This technique can be used in many different scenarios, from healing to self-discovery. It can be used to identify the root cause of physical and emotional issues.

Trauma & Yoga

Trauma can become trapped in the body (especially in thr Fascia, read about it - cool stuff!), manifesting as physical pain, weight gain and discomfort. A mindful practice like Yoga can help identify this trapped trauma and allow the body to process and release it. Through yoga, meditation, and intentional breathing, we can access the subconscious mind and safely and compassionately process the trauma that is stored in the body.

The goal is to move through the emotional and physical pain and dis-

comfort to reach a state of wholeness and peace. With a regular practice, we can learn to accept and integrate the trauma, allowing us to grow and heal. In turn, our hormones begin the healing process. As cortisol is lowered, weight is miraculously released. Remember, you aren't "losing" weight because that means a loss. This is not a loss. The weight that doesn't serve your body is released. If it doesn't feel good, why carry it around?

Practicing yoga is a wonderful way to nourish your mind, body, and soul. In addition to a healthy practice of yoga, walking, playing, family, and community all contribute to our overall well-being and happiness.

Fun fact: A yoga membership gives you an ENTIRE MONTH of unlimited yoga for a hundred bucks. Would you believe that's the average amount spent on dinner, drinks, and dessert in one evening? Some of us hesitate to spend money on lasting relief and good health, but we thoughtlessly spend our hard earned money on quick fixes which can have grave consequences if formed into habits. Food for thought....
